In practical terms, a misunderstood FOB price can distort supplier comparisons, delay approvals, and create avoidable budget gaps after purchase orders are issued.

A good FOB price is useful, but only when everyone agrees on what it includes and what remains outside the seller’s responsibility.
FOB stands for Free On Board. Under this term, the seller delivers goods onto the named export vessel at the agreed port.
Simple enough, but the cost coverage is very specific. The FOB price usually includes the seller’s production and export-side handling up to loading.
If a quoted FOB price covers those steps, it is generally aligned with normal trade practice.

If the FOB price looks unusually low, the missing costs are often packaging upgrades, port handling, or export compliance preparation.
Once the FOB price is confirmed, the next step is to build a landed cost view around it.
Add freight, insurance, duties, destination handling, local delivery, and any inspection or integration costs tied to the project.
That approach gives a more realistic basis for supplier comparison than using a standalone FOB price in isolation.
In security and infrastructure sourcing, where performance, compliance, and deployment timing are tightly linked, clean cost boundaries support better decisions.
If needed, create a short comparison sheet for each quotation and check the same cost line items every time. That is usually where the best savings appear.
